{"id":1176,"date":"2006-07-23T21:07:00","date_gmt":"2006-07-24T04:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.gajunkie.com\/?p=1176"},"modified":"2006-07-23T21:07:00","modified_gmt":"2006-07-24T04:07:00","slug":"thirty-fourth-ga-of-the-presbyterian-church-in-america","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.gajunkie.com\/?p=1176","title":{"rendered":"Thirty-fourth GA of the Presbyterian Church in America"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America meet in<br \/>\nAtlanta, GA, June 20-23, 2006.&nbsp; The actions of the assembly seem<br \/>\nto summarized well by the Stated Clerk&#8217;s (monthly?) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcaac.org\/clerksletter.htm\">letter<\/a><br \/>\nfor July on the PCA web site.&nbsp; I will leave that as the source of<br \/>\nnews and make some comments about what is reported there.<\/p>\n<p>One thing that struck me was the formalization of the moderator<br \/>\nselection process where they alternate annually between teaching elders<br \/>\n(ministers) and ruling elders.&nbsp; This is a middle method between<br \/>\nthe open process of the PC(USA) and the one nominee process that, like<br \/>\nthe Church of Scotland, tend to favor the clergy.&nbsp; This was a<br \/>\nteaching elder year for the PCA.<\/p>\n<p>The second thing that struck me was the number of commissioners and<br \/>\ntheir distribution.&nbsp; There were 1417 commissioners, about 1000<br \/>\nteaching elders and about 400 ruling elders.&nbsp; No requirement for<br \/>\nparity but every congregation has to opportunity to send a voting<br \/>\ndelegate.&nbsp; The assembly did create (or adjust) a committee on<br \/>\nOvertures to meet just before future GA&#8217;s to help prepare the<br \/>\nbusiness.&nbsp; This would have parity of one teaching and one ruling<br \/>\nelder from each presbytery.<\/p>\n<p>The assembly also approved a procedure for recording in presbytery<br \/>\nminutes a minister&#8217;s or candidate&#8217;s disagreements with doctrine.&nbsp;<br \/>\nA presbytery could decide that an individual&#8217;s differences were merely<br \/>\nsemantic, were not out of line with doctrine, or were out of<br \/>\nline.&nbsp; If in the latter category they would not be eligible to<br \/>\nserve.&nbsp; Sounds a bit like what the PC(USA) is arguing about at the<br \/>\nmoment:&nbsp; What constitutes essential tenets of the reformed faith.<\/p>\n<p>There will be a proposed Book of Church Order amendment that<br \/>\nindividuals pass an exam on the English Bible before becoming ruling<br \/>\nelders and deacons.<\/p>\n<p>It is also interesting to note that the reported statistics (49% of<br \/>\nchurches) show in increase in the number of churches and the total<br \/>\nmembership of the denomination.&nbsp; New presbyteries were formed in<br \/>\nthe Atlanta area by splitting off parts of the North Georgia presbytery.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America meet in Atlanta, GA, June 20-23, 2006.&nbsp; The actions of the assembly seem to summarized well by the Stated Clerk&#8217;s (monthly?)
