{"id":210,"date":"2012-05-18T20:21:22","date_gmt":"2012-05-19T03:21:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gajunkie.info\/blog\/?p=210"},"modified":"2012-05-18T20:21:22","modified_gmt":"2012-05-19T03:21:22","slug":"2012-general-assembly-of-the-church-of-scotland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.gajunkie.com\/?p=210","title":{"rendered":"2012 General Assembly Of The Church Of Scotland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font style=\"font-size:8px\"><\/font><font style=\"font-size: 8px;\"><\/font><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>&nbsp;<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" style=\"border: 0px solid; width: 106px; height: 157px;\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/images.quickblogcast.com\/16461-15728\/LogooftheChurchofScotland.png?w=625\"><\/td>\n<td>Coming up this Saturday the first large General Assembly of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.gajunkie.com\/2012\/05\/01\/general-assembly-season-2012.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">2012 season<\/a> begins as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/about_us\/general_assembly\/general_assembly_2012\" target=\"_blank\">2012 General Assembly<\/a> of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Church of Scotland<\/a> is convened in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/news_and_events\/events\/hire_the_assembly_hall\">Assembly Hall<\/a> in Edinburgh.<\/p>\n<p>The Assembly will begin at 10 AM on Saturday 19 May and adjourn a bit after 3 PM on Friday 25 May. On Sunday afternoon 20 May there will be a large public festival in Prince Street Gardens called <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.heartandsoul2012.org.uk\/news\/heart_and_soul_2012\">Heart and Soul 2012<\/a>, inspired by the similar and successful Roll Away the Stone program last year.\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>\nSo, to follow along with the GA here is what you need to know<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Starting Point for almost everything is the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/about_us\/general_assembly\/general_assembly_2012\">General Assembly 2012 page<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0003\/9840\/order_of_proceedings_2012.pdf\">Order of Proceedings<\/a> is available as a PDF and the Daily Papers will be on the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/stream1.churchofscotland.org.uk\/about_us\/general_assembly\/\">media page<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Reports are available individually on the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/about_us\/general_assembly\/general_assembly_2012\">General Assembly 2012<\/a> page or all together in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0007\/9673\/General_Assembly_2012_-_Blue_Book.pdf\">Blue Book<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0004\/9841\/cases_reports_supplementary_reports.pdf\">Supplement<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The Assembly will be webcast, as usual, linked to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/stream1.churchofscotland.org.uk\/about_us\/general_assembly\/\">media page<\/a><\/li>\n<li>In addition, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/stream1.churchofscotland.org.uk\/about_us\/general_assembly\/\">media page<\/a> will have the Daily Updates podcast and Assembly News Items<\/li>\n<li>There is an official <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/external\/facebook_-_cofs\">Facebook page for the Church of Scotland<\/a>, new this year if I remember correctly<\/li>\n<li>On Twitter the official feed is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/churchscotland\">@churchscotland<\/a> and the Assembly hashtag is <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/search\/ga2012\">#ga2012<\/a><\/li>\n<li>You can follow the incoming Moderator of the General Assembly, The Rev. Albert Bogle, on Twitter at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/italker\">@italker<\/a> and his blog &#8211; <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.italker.org.uk\/\">iTalker<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nIf you want to have the polity documents at the ready you start at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/about_us\/church_law\" target=\"_blank\">Church Law web page<\/a> and from there can get the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/about_us\/church_law\/acts\" target=\"_blank\">Acts<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/about_us\/church_law\/regulations\" target=\"_blank\">Regulations<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0012\/705\/standing_orders.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Standing Orders<\/a>, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0018\/864\/practice_procedure_intro.pdf\">An introduction to Practice and Procedure in the Church of Scotland (2009 edition)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The business of the Assembly is not as high-profile and controversial as some years because issues regarding human sexuality are not on the docket &#8212; the Theological Commission dealing with issues related to same-sex relationships in the church that was created by the 2011 GA will report next year.<\/p>\n<p>But based on the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/news_and_events\/news\/articles\/churchs_economics_commission_preaches_good_economics_with_moral_vision\">press release<\/a> and some of the media attention the report <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0009\/9765\/Economics_Commission_email_and_web_version.pdf\">A Right Relationship With Money<\/a> will be interesting to watch.&nbsp; This report, part of the work of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0007\/9592\/23_SPECIAL_2012_P3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Special Commission on the Purposes of Economic Activity<\/a>, is docketed as an Order of the Day at 2 PM on Monday and comes under the Church and Society Council.&nbsp; This is the only Order of the Day that I see in the docket.<\/p>\n<p>I will update this info as necessary and comment in other posts as the week progresses.
