This week the meeting schedule has us drinking from a fire hose and we have to move on to the next one.<\/p>\n<p>About the time I will be posting this the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Presbyterian Church in Ireland<\/a> will be convening their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/Training-Events\/Events\/General-Assembly-2016\" target=\"_blank\">2016 General Assembly<\/a> with what is usually an exceptional worship service and the installation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/News\/Article\/June-2016\/New-Presbyterian-Moderator-to-be-installed-tonight\" target=\"_blank\">new Moderator, the Rev. Dr. Frank Sellar<\/a>. The Assembly runs through Friday 10 June. As the meeting gets going here is some info to help follow along:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The live stream is embedded in the main <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/Training-Events\/Events\/General-Assembly-2016\" target=\"_blank\">Assembly event page<\/a> and below it the programme of streaming highlights for the week.<\/li>\n<li>The special <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/News\/Article\/June-2016\/Wednesday-Night-Celebration-A-Community-of-Global\" target=\"_blank\">Wednesday evening program<\/a> is themed &#8220;A Community of Global Concern&#8221; and will be live streamed. In addition, following the Assembly&#8217;s adjournment there will be the traditional Youth Night on Saturday evening, which will also be live streamed.<\/li>\n<li>More background for the Assembly can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/presbyterianireland.org\/Resources\/General-Assembly\/General-Assembly-2016\" target=\"_blank\">Assembly Resources<\/a> page <del>but I do not yet see the Reports or the full Order of Business posted there yet<\/del>. Update: The <a href=\"https:\/\/presbyterianireland.org\/Resources\/General-Assembly\/General-Assembly-2016\/2016-Assembly-Reports\" target=\"_blank\">Assembly reports page<\/a> has gone live now.<\/li>\n<li>The polity documents include the main document, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/getmedia\/55e57773-d74e-4381-8f16-1fe79060d24e\/The_Code_121031.pdf.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">The Code<\/a>, as well as the helpful <a href=\"https:\/\/presbyterianireland.org\/Resources\/General-Assembly\/General-Assembly-2016\/A-Guide-to-Assembly-Procedure\" target=\"_blank\">A Guide to Assembly Procedure<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/News\" target=\"_blank\">News page<\/a> will carry official press releases and news items including the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/News\/Article\/June-2016\/Countdown-to-General-Assembly-%E2%80%9816\" target=\"_blank\">pre-Assembly press release<\/a> which contains a rundown of the major moments and business at the Assembly this year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are plenty of social media contact points for the Assembly, beginning with the official Twitter account <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/pciassembly\" target=\"_blank\">@PCIAssembly<\/a> which in the past has provided a very helpful and comprehensive news feed on the actions of the Assembly. The official moderator&#8217;s feed at <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/pcimoderator\" target=\"_blank\">@PCIModerator<\/a> has become a great source as well. We will see if Rev. Sellar tweets during GA and how much he shares in his moderatorial year. The official hashtag for the Assembly is <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/pciga16?src=hash\" target=\"_blank\">#pciga16<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other ministries of the church that have Twitter accounts are Presbyterian Women (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pwinireland\" target=\"_blank\">@PWinIreland<\/a>), Mission Ireland (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/missionireland\" target=\"_blank\">@MissionIreland<\/a>) and PCI Global Missions (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pciOverseas\" target=\"_blank\">@PCIOverseas<\/a>). Fair warning that the latter two don&#8217;t seem to have seen much action in a which, similar to another account, Life in PCI (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lifeinPCI\" target=\"_blank\">@lifeinpci<\/a>), that seems to have gone dormant.\u00a0 We will see if any of these might come to life again for this Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>The other set of social media contacts to keep an eye on are those related to the <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/pciyac.org\/events\/spud\/\" target=\"_blank\">Youth Assembly<\/a> of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. They can be followed at a couple of different Twitter handles including the Youth Assembly account for PCI SPUD (<a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/pcispud\" target=\"_blank\">@pcispud<\/a>), and the Youth and Children&#8217;s Ministry account <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pciyac\" target=\"_blank\">@PCIYAC<\/a>. They have previously hosted Fringe Events and you can watch their <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/PCI-SPUD-Youth-Assembly\/163986447015092\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook page<\/a> to see what they might be up to this year.<\/p>\n<p>The list of others to watch for interesting and useful updates must start with prolific reporter and insightful commentator Alan in Belfast (<a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/alaninbelfast\" target=\"_blank\">@alaninbelfast<\/a>). For those active in leadership in the church I would point to former Moderator Rob Craig (<a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/robcraig54\" target=\"_blank\">@RobCraig54<\/a>) and Cheryl Meban (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cherylmeban\" target=\"_blank\">@cherylmeban<\/a>) who is active with WCRC and PCI board leadership. So far there seems to be potential from Stuart Morrow (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Stuart_morrow\" target=\"_blank\">@stuart_morrow<\/a>) and John Hamilton (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/john_nornirn\" target=\"_blank\">@john_nornirn<\/a>). Will update with others as appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>Certainly have a look at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/News\/Article\/June-2016\/Countdown-to-General-Assembly-%E2%80%9816\" target=\"_blank\">preview piece<\/a> for a brief summary of the many topics before the Assembly this year. A report from an Abortion Task Force is getting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/social-affairs\/religion-and-beliefs\/presbyterian-report-bans-abortion-in-rape-incest-cases-1.2673733\" target=\"_blank\">some press coverage<\/a> for its recommendation that the church only condone abortion if the life of the mother is at stake. One of the issues that has surfaced at most GA&#8217;s in recent years has been that of church officers in same-sex relationships and same-sex weddings in the church. The PCI has consistently stood against these but the passage of same-sex marriage in the Republic of Ireland &#8211; which has PCI congregations &#8211; has made it advisable for the General Assembly to consider their policies and practices in this regard. There are also a couple of important anniversaries this year related to events that shaped Ireland. This includes the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/ireland\/irish-news\/state-announces-battle-of-the-somme-centenary-programme-1.2420393\" target=\"_blank\">Battle of the Somme<\/a> in WWI and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2016\/03\/24\/easter-rising-centenary-how-the-1916-insurrection-shaped-modern\/\" target=\"_blank\">events of 1916 in Ireland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As always, our prayers are with the Assembly and their discernment and guidance by the Holy Spirit. We look forward to following their work.<\/p>\n<p>But be warned, they may be the only one live streamed this week, but other Assemblies are out there as well.
