It is being hosted by the Presbytery of Kingston and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.standrewskingston.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Andrew&#8217;s Presbyterian Church<\/a>. Opening worship will be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.standrewskingston.org\/november-stewardship-pre-authorized-remittances\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at the church<\/a> and the business sessions will be in the gym of the Athletic and Recreation Centre at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.queensu.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Queen&#8217;s University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A few things to know to help follow along:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There will <a href=\"https:\/\/livestream.com\/the-Presbyterian-Church-in-Canada\/pccgeneralassembly2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">live streaming<\/a> of the Assembly meetings and they are typically archived afterward<\/li>\n<li>From the <a href=\"http:\/\/presbyterian.ca\/gao\/ga2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GA 2017 page<\/a> you can download the full and final Book of Reports. The daily schedule is found on page A-1 (the 5th page) of the packet and a more detailed docket begins on page C-1 (the 11th page in the packet). The Supplementary Reports is available there as well. Also downloadable from that page is a good Summary of Reports piece that gives an overview of the meeting.<\/li>\n<li>Official news updates are available on the <a href=\"http:\/\/presbyterian.ca\/category\/news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">news feed<\/a>. While we will miss the reporting from the <a href=\"https:\/\/presbyterianrecord.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Presbyterian Record<\/a>, which ceased publication in December, we can probably expect follow-up after the meeting in the new <a href=\"http:\/\/presbyterian.ca\/resources\/#pcconnect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PC Connect e-newsletter<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>I anticipate there will be daily GA Briefings and probably video recordings of the sederunts posted regularly. The Briefings, a summary of each sederunt, <del>will probably be<\/del> are available on the <a href=\"http:\/\/presbyterian.ca\/gao\/ga2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GA 2017 page<\/a> and the videos archived on the <a href=\"https:\/\/livestream.com\/the-Presbyterian-Church-in-Canada\/pccgeneralassembly2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Live Stream Page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/presbyterian.ca\/general-assembly-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">General Assembly Resources page<\/a> is where you will find the important doctrine and governance documents including the Book of Forms and a link to the <a href=\"http:\/\/presbyterian.ca\/download\/aandp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Acts and Proceedings page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The theme for the meeting is &#8220;Yesterday, Today, Forever&#8221;, taken from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Hebrews+13&amp;version=NRSV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">phrase in Hebrews 13:8<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.gajunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/GA-2017-Banner.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2657 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.gajunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/GA-2017-Banner.png?resize=152%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"152\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.gajunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/GA-2017-Banner.png?resize=152%2C300&amp;ssl=1 152w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.gajunkie.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/GA-2017-Banner.png?w=369&amp;ssl=1 369w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 152px) 100vw, 152px\" \/><\/a>The Assembly can be followed on social media through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pcconnect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PCConnect Facebook page<\/a> and through their official Twitter feed <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/pcconnect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@PCConnect<\/a>. UPDATE: Yes, there are pictures but they are on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pcconnect\/albums\/72157684399293066\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PC Connect Flickr feed<\/a> &#8211; sorry to overlook that in the original post.<\/p>\n<p>In early Twitter action I would point to Jeff Loach (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/passionatelyhis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@passionatelyhis<\/a>) (but he may be too busy at the front table) and Scott McAndless (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/A_noble_theme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@A_Nobel_Theme<\/a>) who appears <a href=\"http:\/\/revstandrewshespeler.blogspot.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to be blogging<\/a> the GA. I have not included some of the usual suspects as I don&#8217;t know their status but will update as things get rolling. UPDATE: A number of individuals with great Twitter feeds this week beginning with First Presbyterian Brockville (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/first_kirk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@first_kirk<\/a>) who has a nice play-by-play going. Add to that, in no particular order, Matthew Ruttan (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MatthewRuttan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@MatthewRuttan<\/a>), Jacqui Foxall (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JacquiFoxall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@JacquiFoxall<\/a>), Kristine O&#8217;Brien (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bloomingrev\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@bloomingrev<\/a>), and Curtis Wilson (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CurtisWilson4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@CurtisWilson4<\/a>). Thanks to all of you for your efforts on social media for the Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>Again this year a closely watched item is the joint Committee on Church Doctrine (CCD) and Life and Mission Agency (LMA) report with the follow up from last year&#8217;s discussion on human sexuality. The 16 recommendations they are bringing can be divided into three general groups: 1) Two &#8220;substantive scriptural studies.&#8221; One leads to the conclusion that Bible supports the current stance of the subordinate standards; the other argues for a revision to the understanding concerning human sexuality and marriage in particular. These are presented for study and prayerful consideration. 2) Acknowledging that the members of the church have &#8220;consulted in good faith&#8221; this past year but &#8220;recognize that the church has failed to fulfill the resolution &#8216;to listen to and share the very real pain of homosexuals and their families&#8217; that was adopted by the PCC in 1994 and failed in its call &#8216;to be a welcoming, nurturing, loving and supportive community.'&#8221; and 3) A proposal from the LMA to produce a new study on marriage but in the interim to allow clergy to bless, or not bless, civil marriages according to their conscience. Besides the reports volume there is a <a href=\"http:\/\/presbyterian.ca\/downloads\/39293\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guide to Understanding Reports about Sexuality<\/a>. [Will automatically download a PDF.] Business related to Sexuality Overtures is docketed for various presentations and times of discernment throughout the days of the meeting and the recommendations and docketed groups are in the Guide linked above.<\/p>\n<p>There are a number of other important business items at the meeting. Many committees and agencies will be reporting on their actions related to the new strategic plan approved by the last GA. The Committee on Church Doctrine will also be presenting a resource on Physician Assisted Suicide. A couple related reports deal with the review of the Pensions Plan and its solvency. An overture last year asked for a study to address the reasons for the decline of the church. In their response the Life and Mission Agency says &#8220;Decline is a complex issue and while we can speak in generalities, it is impossible to point to any one thing or factor the church must address in order to reverse the decline. In our current cultural context, all bodies of the church have a collective responsibility to equip the whole people of God to work towards renewal.&#8221; They go on and recommend ways to develop Visionary Leadership and Empowering People and Congregations for Ministry as well as recommend resources.<\/p>\n<p>So prayers and best wishes for the members of the 143rd General Assembly and as they address issues so important to the future witness of the church.
