It started with the OPC General Assembly. Add the 143rd GA of the Presbyterian Church in Canada. Today we add the next one&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Presbyterian Church in Ireland<\/a> convened their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/Events\/General-Assembly-2017.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2017 General Assembly<\/a> in Belfast a little while ago with a worship service and the installation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.gajunkie.com\/?p=2540\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new Moderator, the Right Rev Dr Noble McNeely<\/a>. The Assembly runs through Friday 9 June. With the meeting under way here is some info to help follow along:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The live stream is embedded in the main <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/Events\/General-Assembly-2017.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Assembly page<\/a> and further down the page a few of the streaming highlights for the week and even further down a summary docket of report dates and times.<\/li>\n<li>The special <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/News\/May-2017\/Wednesday-Night-Celebration-Everyday-Disciples.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wednesday evening program<\/a> is themed &#8220;Everyday Disciples&#8221; &#8211; the new Moderator&#8217;s theme for the year &#8211; and will be live streamed. In addition, following the Assembly&#8217;s adjournment there will be the traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/Events\/Youth-Night-2017.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Youth Night<\/a> on Saturday evening, which will also be live streamed. It&#8217;s theme is &#8220;(UN) Faithful &#8211; A faithful God and His unfaithful people, lessons from Hosea<\/li>\n<li>More background for the Assembly can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/Resources\/Categories\/General-Assembly-2017.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Assembly Resources<\/a> page and the reports coming to the Assembly can be viewed individually on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/Resources\/General-Assembly-2017\/General-Assembly-2017-Reports.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reports Page<\/a> or as a whole by downloading the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/getmedia\/45a6de31-1c0e-4302-90fb-f5515a3fe158\/PCI-Annual-Reports-2017.pdf.aspx?ext=.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blue Book<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The polity documents include the main document, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/Resources\/General-Assembly\/The-Code.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Code<\/a>, as well as the helpful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/getmedia\/6d9c0521-c093-4baa-b357-2dc76ff9eaba\/A-Guide-to-Assembly-Procedure.pdf.aspx?ext=.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A Guide to Assembly Procedure<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">News page<\/a> will carry official press releases and news items including the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/News\/June-2017\/General-Assembly-opens-tonight.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pre-Assembly press release<\/a> which contains a rundown of the major moments and business at the Assembly this year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are plenty of social media contact points for the Assembly, beginning with the official Twitter account <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/pciassembly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@PCIAssembly<\/a> which always provides a detailed and comprehensive report of the Assembly. Please note the comprehensive part, because the level of detail can make the feed very busy. This is generally a good thing but you have been warned that the number of tweets will be very high. (Don&#8217;t say I didn&#8217;t warn you.) The official moderator&#8217;s feed at <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/pcimoderator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@PCIModerator<\/a> has become a great source as well. We will see if Rev. McNeely tweets during GA and how much he shares in his moderatorial year. (He does have an almost unused personal feed <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mcneelynoble\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@mcneelynoble<\/a>, but I don&#8217;t think we will see much there this week, or maybe even this year.) The official hashtag for the Assembly is <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/pciga17?src=hash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#pciga17<\/a>. And it is worth keeping an eye on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pciassembly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PCI Facebook page<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n<p>Other ministries of the church that have Twitter accounts are Presbyterian Women (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pwinireland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@PWinIreland<\/a>), Mission Ireland (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/missionireland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@MissionIreland<\/a>) and PCI Global Missions (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pciOverseas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@PCIOverseas<\/a>). Fair warning that I have included the latter two only for the sake of completeness, but they have been dormant for a while.<\/p>\n<p>The other set of social media contacts to keep an eye on are those related to the <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/pciyac.org\/events\/spud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Youth Assembly<\/a> of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. They can be followed at a couple of different Twitter handles including the Youth Assembly account for PCI SPUD (<a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/pcispud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@pcispud<\/a>), and the Youth and Children&#8217;s Ministry account <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pciyac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@PCIYAC<\/a>. They have previously hosted Fringe Events and you can watch their <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/PCI-SPUD-Youth-Assembly\/163986447015092\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook page<\/a> to see what they might be up to this year.<\/p>\n<p>My list of others to watch for interesting and useful updates always starts with outside reporter and insightful commentator Alan in Belfast (<a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/alaninbelfast\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@alaninbelfast<\/a>). He has indicated that he won&#8217;t be around the GA as much this year, but still worth keeping an eye on his feed. For those active in leadership in the church I would point to former Moderator Rob Craig (<a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/robcraig54\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@RobCraig54<\/a>) and Cheryl Meban (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cherylmeban\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@cherylmeban<\/a>) who is active with WCRC and PCI board leadership. So far there seems to be potential from Stuart Morrow (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Stuart_morrow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@stuart_morrow<\/a>), Niall Lockhart (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BallyhenryPres\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@BallyhenryPres<\/a>) and Ballygilbert Church (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ballygilbert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@ballygilbert<\/a>). And while the PCI does not send a representative to Edinburgh for the Church of Scotland GA, the Kirk Moderator is present at this Assembly and tweeting <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/churchmoderator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@ChurchModerator<\/a>. Will update with others as appropriate. UPDATE: To this list I would add Peter Bovill (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/peterbovill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@peterbovill<\/a>) as he had been actively contributing to the feed. And while I have not seen him on the GA feed, please note the recommendation in the comments below for ongoing comments about the PCI.)<\/p>\n<p>In looking at the business of the Assembly a few reports caught my eye. One of these is from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/getmedia\/e870c2d6-09ba-4400-9bdf-7947f9088645\/04-Congregational-Life.pdf.aspx?ext=.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Council for Congregational Life and Witness<\/a>. In looking at fostering revival in the denomination they are presenting the goal as Fruitfulness and many of the actions in agricultural terms. For example, one of the action items is &#8220;Clearing the ground for fruitfulness &#8211; Asking the hard questions.&#8221; I am encouraged when the stage is set to realize there are no easy answers and that change, particularly rebuilding from a biblical foundation, is called for. A consideration that plays into this and which is mentioned in multiple reports is the decline in those training for the ministry. (see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianireland.org\/getmedia\/7110c0f3-983c-4222-bff4-7d816cc999cf\/07-Training-in-Ministry.pdf.aspx?ext=.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Council for Training in Ministry report<\/a>) Another interesting report is the on Relationships with Other Denominations which is Appendix 3 in the General Council Report (starting on the 107th page in the Blue Book). One of the denominations discussed is the relationship with the Church of Scotland and it&#8217;s trajectory (and that is the word used in the report). The report also contains the PCI position on human sexuality and marriage (page 114). And the report presents a possible path to work through the differences in the section titled Principles for Pursuing Mutual Reform. It will certainly be an interesting discussion.<\/p>\n<p>As always, our prayers are with the Assembly and the Moderator for the work ahead and their discernment and guidance by the Holy Spirit.
