{"id":299,"date":"2011-04-29T19:09:00","date_gmt":"2011-04-30T02:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.gajunkie.com\/?p=299"},"modified":"2011-04-29T19:09:00","modified_gmt":"2011-04-30T02:09:00","slug":"the-general-synod-of-the-presbyterian-church-in-trinidad-and-tobago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.gajunkie.com\/?p=299","title":{"rendered":"The General Synod Of The Presbyterian Church In Trinidad And Tobago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 51st General Synod meeting of the <a href=\"http:\/\/presbyterianchurchtt.org\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Presbyterian Church In Trinidad and Tobago<\/a> was held this week. This Presbyterian branch has three presbyteries broken down further into <a href=\"http:\/\/presbyterianchurchtt.org\/worship.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">23 Pastoral Regions<\/a> with four or five churches in each region.&nbsp; The church has 72 primary schools, five secondary schools and a theological college.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of the week the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinidadexpress.com\/news\/Presbyterian_Synod_members_divided_over_selection_of_moderator-120581474.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Trinidad Express reported<\/a> that the election of the Moderator of this General Synod was much less of a formality and more of a contended election.&nbsp; As they put it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Sources told the Express &#8220;members are in favour of a young, vibrant<br \/>\nminister to heal the decay in the falling membership of the church,<br \/>\nwhile the diehards are supporting a former moderator who had served two<br \/>\nterms in that office&#8221;.<br \/>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And later they say<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Express learned Rev Brenda Bullock, current minister serving at<br \/>\nCouva, has the support of the younger members of the synod, as well as<br \/>\nthose who want to see changes in the operations of the church. &#8220;We have<br \/>\nbeen losing members steadily, and now is the time for us to introduce<br \/>\nchanges that would attract young people into the fold,&#8221; said a member of<br \/>\nthe synod, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.<br \/>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So it looks like the &#8220;young, vibrant minister&#8221; prevailed and the Rev. Brenda Bullock was elected for a two year term as Moderator with 80 of the 102 votes, <a href=\"http:\/\/guardian.co.tt\/news\/2011\/04\/29\/presbyterians-have-woman-moderator\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">according to The Guardian<\/a>.&nbsp; In addition to this election being a more contested race, the election of the Rev.
