{"id":426,"date":"2010-05-12T20:16:00","date_gmt":"2010-05-13T03:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.gajunkie.com\/?p=426"},"modified":"2010-05-12T20:16:00","modified_gmt":"2010-05-13T03:16:00","slug":"church-of-scotlandroman-catholic-agreement-on-baptism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.gajunkie.com\/?p=426","title":{"rendered":"Church Of Scotland\/Roman Catholic Agreement On Baptism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In reading through materials for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Church of Scotland<\/a>  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/generalassembly\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">General Assembly<\/a> that will convene its meeting in just over a week my attention was caught by an item contained in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/generalassembly\/downloads\/gareports10ecumenical.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">report of the Committee on Ecumenical Relations<\/a>.&nbsp; It seems that although the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.gajunkie.com\/2010\/05\/03\/pcusa-ecumenical-statment-not-approved-by-the-usccb.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">did not sign off<\/a>  on an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pc-biz.org\/Explorer.aspx?id=1735&amp;promoID=42\" target=\"_blank\">ecumenical statement on baptism<\/a>  with some American Reformed churches, a similar agreement is in place in Scotland.&nbsp; The deliverance of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/councils\/ecumenical\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Committee on Ecumenical Relations<\/a>  asks the Assembly to &#8220;4. Encourage the use of the Liturgy for the Renewal of Baptismal vows on appropriate ecumenical occasions as part of the fruits of the Joint Commission on Doctrine\u2019s study on Baptism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Within the body of the report they say this about the agreement and the liturgy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>5.3 The Joint Commission on Doctrine<\/strong> (Church of Scotland \u2013 Roman Catholic Church) published a joint report on baptism as a study guide for local congregations in 2008. This booklet could not have been written 20 years ago and harvests the fruits of decades of faith and order discussion within the World Council of Churches and between the WCC and the Vatican in the Joint Working Group. Though some may dismiss this important aspect of the ecumenical movement as \u201cold fashioned\u201d, the faith and order agenda continues to provide the platform on which local developments can grow. The Joint Commission has followed up its study on Baptism by producing a PowerPoint presentation that gives the framework out of which the study has come and by commissioning the production of a joint liturgy for the reaffirmation of baptismal vows. All three resources belong together as the fruit of the Joint Commission\u2019 study on Baptism and it is hoped that they will be widely used. The liturgy has been drawn up by a small group that included representation from the Scottish Episcopal Church. This liturgy is now available for general use on appropriate ecumenical occasions.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now, while the report says the &#8220;liturgy is now available&#8221; I have not found it in electronic form in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/generalassembly\/downloads\/gareports10ecumenical.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a>, on the Committee&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/councils\/ecumenical\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">web pages<\/a>, including the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/councils\/ecumenical\/erresources.htm\" target=\"_blank\">resources page<\/a> , or in their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/extranet\/xsupportservices\/xssecumenical.htm\" target=\"_blank\">extranet area<\/a> .&nbsp; (If it is there and I missed it please let me know.)<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line here is that while I am not currently in a position to see how the two forms of agreement differ, it is interesting that one Reformed\/Roman Catholic dialogue was able to craft a mutually agreed statement while another has not been able to do so yet.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In reading through materials for the Church of Scotland General Assembly that will convene its meeting in just over a week my attention was caught by an item contained in [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[37,4,2,102],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-426","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-church-of-scotland","category-ga-business","category-general-assembly","category-roman-catholic"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
