{"id":659,"date":"2009-02-06T04:48:00","date_gmt":"2009-02-06T12:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.gajunkie.com\/?p=659"},"modified":"2009-02-06T04:48:00","modified_gmt":"2009-02-06T12:48:00","slug":"status-of-the-controversal-call-to-a-charge-in-the-church-of-scotland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.gajunkie.com\/?p=659","title":{"rendered":"Status Of The Controversal Call To A Charge In The Church Of Scotland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Like the PC Ireland post from earlier today, this is more of a status report and we are awaiting significant decisions to be made.<\/p>\n<p>For more background you can check my <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.gajunkie.com\/2009\/01\/09\/controversy-over-a-pastoral-call-in-the-church-of-scotland.aspx\">first<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.gajunkie.com\/2009\/01\/10\/further-news-and-comments-on-the-developing-controversy-in-the-church-of-scotland.aspx\">second<\/a> posts on the situation as it developed, but in brief <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.queenscrosschurch.org.uk\/\">Queen&#8217;s Cross Church<\/a> called the Rev. Scott Rennie to be their pastor and the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.presbaberdeen.org.uk\/\">Presbytery of Aberdeen<\/a> concurred.&nbsp; The issue is that the Rev. Rennie is, to use the PC(USA) jargon, a &#8220;self-acknowledged practicing homosexual&#8221; and intends to live in the manse with his partner.&nbsp; This was controversial and not everyone approved, including 24 of the 84 members of presbytery that voted on the concurrence.<\/p>\n<p>Since my last post the presbytery vote has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pressandjournal.co.uk\/Article.aspx\/1047003\">been appealed by 12 members of presbytery<\/a> because of Mr. Rennie&#8217;s lifestyle and the appeal has been accepted by the Commission of Assembly.&nbsp; The council will hear the appeal on March 25 and decide what will happen.&nbsp; My thanks to Louis Kinsey and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/coffeewithlouis.wordpress.com\/2009\/02\/02\/the-next-stage-in-the-appeal-against-the-decision-of-aberdeen-presbytery\/\">his explanation of what could happen<\/a> from there on his blog Coffee with Louis.&nbsp; Here is an excerpt of what he wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Commission of Assembly is appointed by the General Assembly each<br \/>\nyear and comprises one tenth of the ministers, elders and members of<br \/>\nthe diaconate of that General Assembly, plus members ex officiis of<br \/>\nthe General Assembly, minus the previous Moderator.&nbsp; The powers of the<br \/>\nCommission are considerable and its judgements are not subject to<br \/>\nreview:<\/p>\n<p><i>&#8216;provided that any case in which, in the opinion of the<br \/>\nCommission, an important issue of principle is at stake may be referred<br \/>\nby the Commission to the General Assembly.&#8217;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>It may therefore be the case that the complaint is upheld or denied<br \/>\nthere and then, or it may be referred to the General Assembly of the<br \/>\nChurch of Scotland in May.&nbsp; Only the Lord knows.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\nSo, at this point we are waiting for the Council meeting on March 25 to see what will happen next.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Like the PC Ireland post from earlier today, this is more of a status report and we are awaiting significant decisions to be made.
