{"id":935,"date":"2007-10-28T13:51:00","date_gmt":"2007-10-28T20:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.gajunkie.com\/?p=935"},"modified":"2007-10-28T13:51:00","modified_gmt":"2007-10-28T20:51:00","slug":"presbyterian-church-usa-and-church-of-scotland-parallels","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.gajunkie.com\/?p=935","title":{"rendered":"Presbyterian Church (USA) and Church of Scotland Parallels"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><\/div>\n<p>A new news article &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcusa.org\/pcnews\/2007\/07690.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Church of Scotland leaders see many parallels with PC(USA)<\/a>&#8221; talks about a visit by two <a href=\"http:\/\/www.churchofscotland.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Church of Scotland<\/a> ministers to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcusa.org\" target=\"_blank\"> Presbyterian Church (USA)<\/a> offices in Louisville.&nbsp; The story from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcusa.org\/pcnews\" target=\"_blank\"> Presbyterian News Service<\/a> discusses the ministers&#8217; trip and how they talked with PC(USA) staff, particularly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcusa.org\/gac\/directory3.htm#staff\" target=\"_blank\"> Rev. Tom Taylor<\/a>, about similar issues for both churches.&nbsp; These include the decline in membership, lack of young people joining\/participating in the church, restructuring the national offices, and the controversy over ordination standards.&nbsp; The story says that Rev. Taylor had visited the Church of Scotland offices last spring for similar discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond those listed in the story, the list of parallel challenges between the two churches goes very deep.&nbsp; Three or four years ago, at a meeting of a presbytery committee I was on, I read off a list of issues before the General Assembly that included the ones mentioned above plus some more that included more subtle polity and membership issues.&nbsp;
